Purim Symbols

Purim is a joyful holiday celebrated by Jews around the world, and it has several symbols associated with it:

  • The Megillah: The scroll of the book of Esther, which tells the story of Purim and is read in synagogues during the holiday.
  • Hamantaschen: A traditional cookie in the shape of a triangular hat, symbolizing the hat worn by Haman, the villain in the story of Purim.
  • Masquerade: Many communities participate in masquerade parties during Purim, where people dress up in costumes and masks to celebrate the holiday.
  • Gifts of Food: Sending food packages, known as Mishloach Manot, to friends and family is a traditional Purim activity.
  • Noise Makers: Throughout the reading of the Megillah, Jews use noise makers, such as groggers, to drown out the name of Haman every time it is mentioned.
  • Feast: Purim is a time for feasting and celebrating with friends and family, and traditional foods like hamentaschen and wine are enjoyed.

These symbols serve as a reminder of the joyous events that took place during Purim, and they help to bring the story of the holiday to life.

Purim Story

The story of Purim takes place during the time of King Ahasuerus in the ancient Persian Empire. The king’s wife, Queen Vashti, was removed from her position because she didn’t follow the king’s orders. A search was held all over the empire to find a new queen. The new queen was Esther, a Jewish woman who lived in Persia with her cousin Mordecai.

Haman, the king’s advisor, hated Jews, so he persuaded the king to make a law that all Jews in the empire would be killed. Mordecai heard about the decree and told Esther that she should tell the king that she is Jewish and ask him to protect her people. Esther was brave when she went to the king and told him about her family history. This made Haman’s evil plans known. The king was furious and had Haman killed. He also made a new law that gave the Jews the right to fight back against their attackers.

On the 13th of Adar, the Jews were able to defend themselves and beat their enemies. This day became known as Purim, which means “feasting and joy.” Jews all over the world still celebrate Purim by reading the book of Esther, called the Megillah, giving money to people in need, having a feast with friends and family, and being happy that they won against those who wanted to hurt them. The holiday of Purim is a reminder of how important it is to be brave, work together, and stay united when bad things happen.
